Merry Christmas from the McDonalds

Merry Christmas Y’all!

This Christmas season has seemed to take us by a whirlwind. There is no greater saying deeper to the heart for us in the spirit of Christmas. Oh there’s no place like HOME for the holidays… isn’t that the truth. Our home is really starting to feel like home and we were so happy to be fully settled in just in time for all the Christmas festivities. This year was a little crazy with the 4th week of advent falling on Christmas Eve but we ran with it.

First up we had our McMillan family Posada on the 23rd. What is a Posada? A Posada is a Hispanic Catholic tradition. It originated in Spain and the tradition was brought over to Mexico by the Catholic Missionaries in the 1500’s. Posadas are a reenactment of Joseph and Mary’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a place for the Christ Child to be born. They start December 16 and end December 24th at mid-night mass. Songs asking for entrance into the homes are sang at the front doors. Then everyone begins the Posada celebration. This year our family threw a huge Posada. One to celebrate the coming of baby Jesus with friends and family but also as a to thank all of our friends who helped us during Harvey this year when all of us were without our own home. It was a beautiful celebration. Tamales, treats,  and of course the classic pinata.

I made the appetizers for the Posada and many were asking me for the recipes. So I’ve attached the links to the top apps made for the Posada. I chose these recipes for several reasons. 1. Super easy to make. 2. Easy to double up so I could use for later celebrations throughout the week. 3. Yummy! These are just a few:

Bacon Ranch Cheese Ball (I added jalapeno to it)

Islander Spinach & Artichoke Dip

Sausage Crescent Cheese Balls

Perfect Bruschetta

Christmas Eve morning was very relaxing. Ben, Belle, and I just piddle around the house. We went and shared our favorite plate of raw oysters, a Christmas Eve tradition my dad and I use to share. Then we got ready for Mass and Christmas celebrations with my family. We got together with my moms best friend Maggie for our traditional Christmas Eve dinner. We played our own fun version of white elephant gift exchange which always brings a couple of hours of  classic good entertainment and hysterical laughing.

Christmas day we woke up early Ben made us delicious cappuccinos and we did our little family Christmas. Ben did awesome this year on gifts. Well he really does awesome every year. Belle & Ben got matching pajamas probably my favorite part. We then opened gifts with my family. We were so excited this year for mom to open her gift. My brothers and I early on chatted and decided that our favorite thing to do as a family is travel. So why spend a lot of money on random gifts for each other and why not just book a trip and surprise mom. So for Mothers Day 2018 we are taking my mom to Disney World. She was so happy and I honestly I think in shock. We figured this was the year she deserved to be spoiled by us for a change. We then went to Ben’s aunt & uncles house for a feast over brunch. Man was that delicious. Anytime we all get together you would think we are feeding an army with the amount of food we graze over. It was nothing short of delicious, yummy, and I probably gained a few pounds. We hung out with family opened gifts and watched your typical cheesy hallmark Christmas movie. Everything close to perfect for a Christmas afternoon oh and all in our Christmas PJS. We ended the day watching a sad Texans lost and watching more terrible worthy movies with the family. The day was pretty close to perfection!

The 26th was Gumbo with fantastic six. Yes our group of friends we call ourselves that. Unfortunately 2 of our members were down with the flu but it was a good laugh none the less and delicious gumbo.

Now that all the festivities have come to end well I say that but our good friends get married in 3 days and New Years in 4. We are very thankful for everything 2017 brought us. Yes we got a little shook up through hurricane Harvey and other tragedies that struck our country and world but we will never stop counting our blessings.

Our many blessings of 2017:

  • Ben was promoted Lt.
  • I switched jobs. I’m back at my home Parish.
  • Patrick recovered and is now healthy from his appendix explosion.
  • We traveled across Europe with my family. Saw breathtaking places we never imagined. Walked the sites of many Saints that changed this world.
  • Family blessing from Pope Francis.
  • We survived getting our first home fixed up through flood thanks to all of our family and friends.
  • Kenny & Lizzi got married.
  • Our business reopened.
  • Ben won firefighter of the year.
  • We celebrated Morgan’s final countdown.
  • Marco & Kelsy got engaged.
  • Robert & Taylor got engaged.
  • Chris & Ariel will be getting married.

These are just a few of the blessings in our lives this year. We are so grateful for all of our family and friends and we can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store for the McDonald family. Wishing you and your loved ones a HAPPY & BLESSED 2018.
